Discover the subject collections at the library

Curious where you can find the reference works and recent acquisitions of your discipline? Interested where you can find our theme collections, for instance on decolonization, LGBTQIA+ topics or Environmental Humanities? Find out where the various open collections of the University Library are located.

Our open collections
At an increasing number of locations on the VU Campus, you can find our open collections. These are partly subject collections for teaching and research, and partly multidisciplinary thematic collections for inspiration and in-depth study. You can find the locations of our open collections below.

You can look up the location of a book in . If you don’t want to look up the book yourself, you can request it through LibSearch. Of course, you can also access our ebooks, ejournals and other eresources through LibSearch.

  • 1st floor | Exam Literature | Inspiratiecollections: Boeken of Importance, Banned Books, Special Collections, Open Science, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) 

    Exam Literature 
    Here you can find the exam literature for all subject areas except Medical. These books can be borrowed for one day. 

    Books of Importance & Library Staff Picks  
    In addition, you will find two inspiration collections. The Books of Importance comprise a selection of the most significant books from various academic fields. The Library Staff Picks are chosen by the University Library staff and supplemented with fiction, non-fiction, picture books, and other literature, allowing you to relax between study sessions. 

    Special Collections  
    VU’s Special Collections are also housed in the University Library. Are you interested in early printed works and manuscripts, or would you like to consult the collection of maps and atlases? Then reserve the desired items via  . The material will be ready for consultation at 09:00 on the next working day. 

    Open Science collection  
    At VU Amsterdam, we believe that sharing our collective knowledge leads to significant positive effects and benefits for society. Browse the and for more information about the Open Science movement. 

    Banned Books  
    The Banned Books Collection explores literature that has faced censorship, restrictions, or removal in various cultures and time periods. This thematic collection is inspired by the international Banned Books Week, an initiative that highlights the importance of freedom of expression and democratic access to information. 

    SDG-collections 
    VU Amsterdam has committed itself to the United Nations’ sustainability goals. Based on these goals, the University Library has brought together several collections on the 1st floor in which a theme is highlighted from different perspectives and periods. How does your discipline contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being? Or to SDG 5: Gender Equality? On the bookshelves along the walls of this study space, you will find seven multidisciplinary book collections on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that best align with VU’s ambitions.

  • 4th floor | Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) 

    Two special collections have been assembled for the John Stuart Mill College: and . The first encompasses a selection of works by important thinkers in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. The second collection features a compilation of book recommendations from PPE faculty members. The books from these collections are available for borrowing. 

    Please note: the John Stuart Mill College space is accessible only to students of this program. Would you like to borrow a book from the collection? Reserve it through LibSearch so you can pick it up in the library space on the first floor. 

  • 5th floor | General Reference Works 

    The general reference works can be consulted in the study and learning environment on the 5th floor, but are not available for borrowing. 

  • 7th floor | Business Administration & Public Administration 

    The Business Administration and Public Administration collections can be found on the 7th floor. Books from these collections can be borrowed using the self-service station. 

  • 9th floor | Subject collections: History & Art History | journals for Humanities and Theology and Religious Studies 

    The collections for Cultural Studies, History, and Art History can be found on the 9th floor. The reference works may only be consulted in the library and cannot be borrowed. Books from the self-service collections can be borrowed via the self-service station on the 9th floor. 

    You will also find the recent issues of print journals for the Humanities and for Theology and Religious Studies. Lift the shelves to find the most recent issues of each journal. Older issues can be requested via LibSearch. 

  • 10th floor | Subject collections: Theologiy, Religious Studies and Philosophy | Ukraine collection 

    Subject collections: Theologiy, Religious Studies and Philosophy 
    The collections for these subject areas can be found on the 10th floor (accessible via the 9th floor). At the entrance to the study room, there is a special section dedicated to recent acquisitions . The reference works may only be consulted in the library and cannot be borrowed. Books from the recent acquisitions and the self-service collections can be borrowed via the self-service station on the 9th floor. 

    Ukraine collection 
    On the 10th floor, you will find an inspiration collection of books covering many facets of Ukrainian literature, culture, and history (accessible via the 9th floor). This collection was created over the course of 2023. That year, the Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands called on Dutch universities to support Ukrainian university libraries affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine. In response to this call, the VU Library donated books in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics to the Central Scientific Library in Kharkiv. The donation consisted of duplicate copies from our own collection as well as books from the private collections of VU researchers. Several other Dutch universities also provided support to Ukrainian universities. To highlight these partnerships, the VU Library compiled this collection with the help of Ukrainian librarians.

  • 11th floor | Theme collections: Pride Library & Decolonisation Lab 

    Pride Library  
    The Pride Library makes scholarly literature on LGBTQIA+ topics accessible and visible. In addition to academic work, you will find hundreds of fiction and non-fiction rainbow books. You can borrow the books via the University Library’s self-service station on the 12th floor or use them directly in the space. . 

    This space in the library also serves as a meeting place for the queer community. For news and current events, visit the VU Pride website

    Decolonisation Lab  
    On the 11th floor you will find the Decolonisation Lab, which was established and is run by the VU Diversity Office. In collaboration with the Diversity Office, VU staff members, and the student association F.A.M., the library has compiled a collection for the lab on colonialism and slavery, as well as the current debate on the decolonisation of universities. The books from the Decolonisation Lab can be borrowed via the self-service station on the 12th floor.

  • 12th floor | Subject collections: Linguistics and Literature | Theme collection: Mindful Library 

    Subject collections Linguistics and Literature  
    These subject collections can be found on the 12th floor. The reference works may only be consulted in the library and cannot be borrowed. Books from the self-service collections can be borrowed via the self-service station on the 12th floor. 

    Mindful Library  
    In the Mindful Library, you will find a entirely dedicated to mindfulness and meditation. Explore topics such as Buddhism, psychoanalysis, and spirituality. Browse this collection on the 12th floor, focused on mindfulness and personal growth, and discover the answer to these and other questions. The books from this collection can easily be borrowed via the self-service station located next to the bookshelf. Prefer to read online? Then view the here. 

    The collection was compiled in collaboration with the Faculty of Religion and Theology. It has also benefited from a donation of books on Buddhism from the Netherlands Buddhist Archive. 

  • 13th floor | Theme collection: Environmental Humanities

    This multidisciplinary thematic library on Environmental Humanities is located in room 13B04 in the library on the 13th floor. The collection was compiled in collaboration with the . Students and staff of the EHC regularly use this space for meetings and events. When the space is not in use by the EHC, all students are welcome to study, meet, and browse the collection here. 

    . The books can be borrowed via the self-service station on the 12th floor. 

  • 14th floor | Subject collections | Ancient History, Classics, and Archaeology 

    The collections for Ancient History, Classics, and Archaeology can be found on the 14th floor. The books may only be consulted in the library and cannot be borrowed.
