Literature and Society

Almost all students who complete their Literature and Society degree programme go on to pursue a master's degree at VU Amsterdam, another Dutch university, or choose to study for a master's degree abroad.

The Master's programme in Literature is the most popular choice for this track, but you can also opt for a Master's in Linguistics or the two-year Master's in Education, which will qualify you to teach. You can also choose a research Master's if you aspire to a PhD position. In short: there are plenty of options.

Once you have completed your Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Literature:

  • you will be able to write (creatively) yourself
  • you will have a critical eye and critical thinking skills
  • you will be able to convert large amounts of complex information into well-structured and clear communication
  • you will be able to work at universities of applied sciences, the government, publishing houses, media agencies and many other places

Start your career

There are many opportunities for graduates from Literature and Society, but most of our students continue to pursue careers that allow them to think critically and challenge social norms. Within the academic world, our graduates become high-school teachers or university professors. In the literary world, they work in publishing houses, organise literary events, edit journals or in some other way contribute to the written word. Some students also become researchers for ministries or non-profit organisations. Whatever you choose, VU's career orientation course is here to help you take the next step.
